Located in the center of Yamagata Prefecture is a city just waiting for you to “make your next move”, Tendo City is the ‘home’ of Japanese Chess or ‘Shogi’ – with most of the pieces used in Shogi being crafted here.

This love of the game has also manifested itself in the yearly spectacle of the ‘Human Shogi’ festival that takes place in the spring. Costumed participants representing their pieces are moved around the board to recreate a game of shogi for those watching.

It’s not all about Shogi though – Tendo offers great opportunity for picking fresh fruits as well as relaxing onsen hot springs.
